May 5th!!!

Page #1 of 3!

Today was very rainy in Rome and generally that kept me indoors. However, in the afternoon I visited the Basilica of Saint Peter in Vincoli. That is to say, Saint Peter's in Chains. Beneath the main altar there is a reliquary when the chains are kept that were supposedly used to hold down Saint Peter while he was imprisoned near the Foro Romano. However, the basilica's real claim to fame is that it houses the great statue of Moses carved by Michaelangelo as part of the funeral monument of Pope Julius II. The funeral monument was never completed, but the statue of Moses is magnificent.

The front of Saint Peter in Chains is quite plain.

The inside is a bit more luxurious.

Moses!

This reliquary is beneath the altar.

I am looking from the Blessed Sacrament Chapel towards the statue of Moses, across the sanctuary of the basilica.

This is the ceiling of the basilica. I know that it is a bit dark, but please remember that it is also very high up!

This is a mosaic of Saint Sebastian.

This is the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
