This is a side street near St. Peter's, a street filled with eateries of various sorts! |
Near St. Peter's this part of the walls has a Papal Tiara (crown) and Keys over the gate...along with the modern security camera! |
The very next arch has a plaque with the civic marking SPQR -- Senatus Populusque Romanus - The Senate and the Roman People! Church and state try to live together in peace! |
This is the Largo Angentina. It is said that on this spot Julius Caesar was murdered by Brutus (Et tu, Brute?) Later, his body was taken to the Foro Romano for cremation. |
In the distance is the Pantheon. The obelisk is in the Piazza in front of the Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva - St. Mary over Minerva (an ancient Roman goddess). The Dominicans have has custody of this church for centuries. |
This is the Chapel of Saint Raymond of Pennefort. |
This is the tomb of Fra Angelico, a famous Dominican painter from the Middle Ages. It is very unusual that a friar would be buried inside of a church instead of in the community cemetery. This indicates the high regard in which Fra Angelico was held by his contemporaries. |
This Statue of the Risen Christ was carved by Michaelangelo and is to the left of the sanctuary of the Church. |
