This is the altar in the Mamertine Prison. Saint Peter is said to have been imprisoned here.

This is the underground prison room where Peter is alleged to have been held in chains. Here he prayed and a spring bubbled over so that he could baptize his jailers after converting them.

They say this is the very pillar where Peter was chained.
