We also celebrated Mass at this altar last year. |
What a sight! |
This is the Altar of Pope Saint Leo the Great where Fr. Luke and I celebrated Mass last week. |
This is said to be Saint Peter's chair itself. That seems doubtful, but it is a wonderful piece of art. Mass was being celebrated here for some pilgrims when I took this photo. |
This photo was taken back at the Angelicum. This columns in the cloister garden were made with marble taken from the Coliseum. I guess that the nuns needed marble and since the pope was a Dominican (St. Pius V), he gave permission. |
This had been the refectory or dining room of the monastery when the nuns were here. After the construction of the monastery was completed, the roof began to sag. It was strengthened with columns taken from the nearby Roman Forum, columns that were lying around unused after many centuries. |
For many years they did not even know that there were paintings on the ceiling of the refectory. They were uncovered a few years ago, but because of the support needed by the columns, they cannot be restored in their entirety. This room is now used as a room for the students of the university to relax during class breaks. |
