April 28th!!!
Page #1 of 3!
This morning I walked by myself to Santa Sabine on the Aventine Hill, the site of the Curia of the Dominican Order. Saint Dominic was granted this church in the early 13th Century and his room has been preserved as a small Chapel. After celebrating Mass in Saint Dominic's Cell, I also visited the Church of Saint Mary in Cosmedin. This Church celebrates Mass according to the Byzantine Rite. It is also the site of the Bocca de Verita. It is said that this ancient "manhole" cover will bite off your hand if you place it in the mouth and you are not telling the truth. That evening Fr Luke and I had dinner with some friends of his from San Diego.
I you walk to the Aventine Hill you pass the Church of Saint Mary in Cosmedin. |
This is the ceiling of the apse in Santa Sabina. While I do not know the date, it is said that this painting is quite old. |
This is the nave of Santa Sabina. The Church was built in the 5th Century and it preserves much of it ancient Roman character. |
This is the sanctuary of the Church. In front of the altar is the choir where the Friars pray the Liturgy of the Hours. |
Santa Sabina is known as the "Jewel of the Aventine Hill!" |
These ancient funeral monuments were found during various excavations. Little is known about them so they are simply placed on the walls for historical interest. |
This is Saint Dominic's Cell. The area where the altar is located was most likely his "private space." |
This is a closer view of the altar. |
