May 3rd!!!
Page #1 of 3!
This morning Fr. Luke and I went to San Peitro's for Mass in the Chapel of Sts. Cyril & Methodius. This chapel is located in the crypt under the basilica and honors the apostles of Eastern Europe and the Slavic Nations. Pope John Paul II has made it known that this is where he wishes to be buried. My guess is that the tomb is already carved and in storage until its use is required! After a cappuccino, Fr. Luke returned to teach and I stayed in San Pietro's to say some prayers and enjoy the beauty of this magnificent church. The photos do not really do justice to the grandeur of Saint Peter's, but maybe they will convey some sense of the glory of God as it is reflected in human creativity.
I am note sure if I will add more pictures today than these. Who knows? Only time will tell!
This plaque to the left of Saint Peter's marks the original location of the Vatican Obelisk. It was very near this spot that Saint Peter was martyred. Many early martyrs for the faith also witnessed to Christ at this spot. |
This ancient painting of Our Lady is in the crypt of San Pietro's. |
This is the tomb of Pope Paul VI. |
This is the tomb of Pope Marcellus. He may have been the one that some say betrayed Christ during a persecution, but later repented and died a martyr for the faith. |
This shrine is located just above the grave of Saint Peter, below the main altar of the Basilica. |
This is the tomb of James II (III?) of England. Because he was a Catholic, he was not allowed to reign in England. |
This is the tomb of Saint Josephat, an Eastern Rite Bishop who died a martyr's death in the 17th Century. |
This is the tomb of Blessed Pope John XXIII. Fr. Luke and I were able to celebrate Mass at this altar last week. |
